Cycling – so many styles

IMG_7874

Sometimes you look at what you’re doing and you wonder at other times you can be content.

Meeting Bruno and Isabelle Frébourg was one over those wonderFULL experiences. People who make you stop, think and wonder. They’ve been on the road almost continually since 2006 riding their bikes throughout the world, exploring, providing inspiration and meeting humanity face to face. Its a wonderFULL thing that there are still adventurers testing themselves against the norm and the beaten path.

My brother Peter met them in North Queensland and they stayed with him overnight as they pedalled one stroke at a time from Darwin to Melbourne on their 65kg cycles after covering the earth since 2006. You can read a little of their story here on their blog. They have covered half the earth in the past 7 years and in the next 7 years they intend to cycle through the Americas from Canada in the north down through Brazil and beyond.

In the photo above Bruno and Isabelle are at the Smith Gully General Store near Melbourne, Australia.

Earlier in the week I was lucky enough to do a group ride out to the Smiths Gully General Store with others in another cycling style, racing. The highly competitive world of fast movement through time, space and country. The ride was organised by Shane Miller who has recently returned from a successful run in the Tour of Bright (Masters 1-2-3). For the ride to the SGGS Shane adopted a “drop-no-one” policy. It was an interesting mix of young, old and club competition riders. It was a beautiful sunny day and Shane suggested we wag work and go for a bike ride. I loved it, riding through some of my favourite country at a nice pace and stopping at Smiths Gully General Store for a coffee and violet crumble bar and/or Christmas fruit mince tart.

Here are a few more photos. 1/ Bruno and Isabelle’s loaded up bikes, 2/ Shane and Janine on Clintons Road,  3/ Race number? 4/ The Wag Workers
